3 Dec 2020, still quite cold

Status: Sheltering in place, we have plenty of food and supplies.

We’ve installed a new Air Conditioner and there is a terrible amount of work to be accomplished. The highest priority is insulate the ducts against moisture and clean up the living room. I have to run a new duct to the dining room and do a bit of insulating on the ductwork over the living room.

Looks like the Church audio equipment is staying in the living room, we have another outdoor service in three weeks.

I weighed in at 220 today, that’s five Lbs over my maximum weight. I will reduce my calories in hopes to drop to 215 this week. 190 would be a great goal.

My EcoFlow R600 Pro won’t be shipped until the end of the month, I should get it around Christmas.

I bought the supplies I need to do the ducts on the west side of the air handler today. It’s too cold to tear out ducts that I cannot replace in one day. I did pull the 6″ duct from the bathroom and pull a 10″ duct over the top of it to give it some more insulation. It turned out to be a job with the one end of the duct attached. I’ll take temperatures tonight to see if it is better. It should be very cold again tomorrow morning. 🙁

It was cold this morning and it’s going to be even colder tonight! I think that I am ready. I’ve charted the performance looking for any problem that might arise at night when it’s really cold. I’ve also added a 2nd wireless temperature sensor so that I can average Living Room, Kitchen, Bedroom temps for thermostat’s decisions. The duct for the Kitchen is still run all the way to my cave and the two small bedrooms have the old ductwork in them.

It is going to be very COLD tonight, I spent some time covering up the water faucets and the water meter. There was an uninsulated duct from the plenum that I finally covered today. I watched the performance of the Heat Pump as the night unfolded, one thing that I was unprepared for was a rapid incline to 100% compressor.

To prevent the Thermostat from switching to Emergency Heat (Gas) I turned on the heaters in the living room (the ones I used while the Ducts were disconnected) and the thermostat relented as shown in the above graphic.

Then I wrote routines in Home Assistant to turn on space heaters 200W at 60%, 500W at 67% and 700W at 75% compressor speed. That way if the heat pump gets a slug of cold air, the space heaters can help. The data collected for the remainder of the night showed that the Heat Pump could easily heat our home.

Church services went pretty well, both of us messed up our parts of the service this morning.

I’ve changed the Air Handler to 1130 CFM to raise the static pressure on the ducts in the bedroom.

Found a couple dogs wandering around the neighborhood, chased their tags for a bit then called Gwinnett County.

Talked to my brother, my mom is under the weather. Talked to my son and we’re working with his Air Conditioner ducting in his home. My mom called me and i’ll have to call her back.

I gathered up most of the loose 40yr old duct insulation and bagged it during the night. There’s only about half a dozen pieces still in the attic. Most of the metal duct is still up there, but not connected to the air handler. If I can, I need to get all this trash out of the attic as soon as possible. Today has been pretty busy with coordination with my Stepmom and figuring out the ductwork. Best guess at the moment is that i have installed enough ductwork to drop the static pressure below what is needed for the bedroom. Also it looks like we may be starving the evaporator.

As you can see from the data, the air into the bedroom is 6 degrees cooler than the living room. That did work in our favor to keep the bedroom temperature right at our preferred set point. (How I don’t know, the setpoint for the living room is 70 degrees.)

Today I buried the 6″ duct under several layers of insulation to see if it helps the duct air temperature in the bedroom. Hopefully the air will be several degrees warmer and close to the temperature of the short 8″ duct. I can’t go forward until I understand the interaction of the insulation and the variable speed air handler. The air velocity has made engineering this ductwork much more complicated. I don’t think I am on the same page with my Trane installer on these affects.

Went to the park with the family today, we had a great time. But we forgot to take pictures!

Narrative: I’m skipping the time bullets today. The heater worked pretty well with the majority of the ducts connected back. I used the NodeMCU network to record some data on the performance of the ducts I’ve already installed. (Not Many) There’s one 7″ vent and one 6″ vent, that’s it for almost two weeks of work. It’s hard to work in the attic when you are 66, believe me!

The first data I collected was on the 10″ duct in my cave to the 6″ in the master bedroom.

As you can see there is about 5 degrees difference in the 10″ versus the 6″ in the bedroom. But this data was collected with the other 6″ for the bathroom blocked off. I did a comparison between the two 6″ ducts and the data was identical so there is nothing wrong with the Master bedroom line.

The next data set was from the two ducts i installed to see how much of a difference that the 6″ duct made on the air temp. There are two major factors, the mass of the 8″ WYE and the length of the 6″ ducts.

As you can see the 6″ even compared to the same port on the plenum didn’t perform as well as the 8″ duct in the living room (Yes the graphic is incorrectly labeled.) I did manage to terminate the 2nd 6″ duct onto the vent in the Master Bath. There has not been a supply duct on that vent in 25 years. I had to cut 1″ off the bottom of the bathroom door to allow for return air to flow into the bedroom where there is extra ventilation to get the air back to the air handler.

Narrative: I’m skipping the time bullets today. The heater worked pretty well with the majority of the ducts connected back. I am a little worried about the 6″ duct, it’s about 4 degrees cooler and the humidity response is totally wild.

When I shut off the compressor the humidity jumped to 100%, like immediately even though it would have taken 4 seconds to travel across the 25 feet of duct… I need to gather more data. It looks like I may have to use the bathroom duct which will require adding a through the wall return air in the bathroom wall, or add a second duct in the master bedroom.

Researched Philippines Typhoons last month, they took a huge toll on the island. I watched several videos, 3-5 feet of water leaving 3-5″ of mud on everything inside their homes and on the streets. This will take a long time to clean up.

24 Nov 2020, a day in progress

Status: Sheltering in place, we have plenty of food and supplies.

We’ve installed a new Air Conditioner and there is a terrible amount of work to be accomplished. The highest priority is insulate the ducts against moisture and clean up the living room. I have to run a new duct to the living room and bedroom to give the air handler more flow.

Looks like the Church audio equipment is staying in the living room, we have another outdoor service in three weeks.

I weighed in at 217 today, that’s two Lbs over my maximum weight. I will reduce my calories in hopes to drop to 215 this week. 190 would be a great goal.

My EcoFlow R600 Pro won’t be shipped until the end of the month, I should get it around Christmas.

Karen AMI:So white people who celebrate the success of black lives demonstrates the inequity of the black experience and white people who don’t celebrate success of black lives also demonstrate the inequity? I am just trying to keep up here. And I must be a Karen because I don’t see race, I see PEOPLE, fellow human beings instead of a color. You don’t have to attack me, I know, that Not seeing color makes me a racist. And seeing color first makes me a racist too. I know. I am the problem. For sure. It’s a tough gig. Narrative: I’m skipping the time bullets today. I started working on the attic first thing this morning without drinking my coffee, it was COLD. We had to run electric space heaters in place of the central air conditioning because I removed the duct pipes a couple days ago. I had checked the weather before crippling the air conditioner by removing the ducts. There wasn’t much I could do, I had already planned on “Assisting” the air conditioner with very small space heaters controlled by Home Automation. They kept the house from getting much below 69 degrees.

I’ve come a long way on this project, but as of this morning there were only two vents still connected to the air handler on the West side of the house. I’d cut a hole and mounted a new pipe to the South. I also managed to add a wye from 10″ to two 8″ pipes pretty early in the morning. I dropped my 1/4″ driver down alongside the air handler so I had to buy a new one before going much further.

By the end of the afternoon i had taken another nap and connected the first 8″ duct to the air handler. The 2nd 8″ duct was from the master bedroom and it needed a 6″ wye to connect to the 6″ vent in the ceiling. After dinner I connected and bundled the ducts together and pulled them across the attic. After taking another break about 7PM I connected the 8″ side to the air handler. The 6″ side was much easier since the space above the master bedroom has plenty of support above the insulation. By 9PM I was ready to turn on the air handler and see how everything works. There was good air to the master bedroom but it was 4 degrees cooler than the 8″ living room vent. It did match up to the two 6″ vents in the other two bedrooms that are still hard pipe. (And have considerably shorter runs.)

The 55 Gl trash can is getting quite full from all of the insulation i’ve taken from the attic. The recycling is also full from all the cardboard from the duct shipments.

Headed to bed.
