20 Oct 2020, a day in progress

Status: Sheltering in place, we have plenty of food and supplies. We’ve installed a new Air Conditioner and there is a terrible amount of work to be accomplished. The highest priority is insulate the ducts against moisture and clean up the living room.

“If we wish to establish racial equality or gender equality, or equality in any social structure — acknowledge that we can’t pick and choose who gets to be a part of the equality equation. As a humanitarian, before any label that I associate with myself; I hope we recognize that we can only resolve our issues through respect and humility. Through recognizing that it’s not okay to simply “demand” respect whilst belittling an entire culture.” medium.com/in-defense-of-white-people

One of our Childfund children is living in a home without power. They are using kerosene lamps for light at night which is really bad for their health. It appears that the in country team has responded with a quote to provide commercial power to their home.

This is a quote to install what American’s usually see as a construction pole with a duplex outlet underneath near their home. They will also need an extension cord to reach into their bamboo house and a light fixture to replace the kerosene lamp.

It will take until November to receive the money in country and maybe late December before the power pole is installed and connected to over 700 feet of wire. In America we would have installed telephone poles every hundred feet. (Five poles.) The voltage drop will probably prevent running a refrigerator.

They got our ballot!

  • 07:00 Coffee and getting organized.
  • 08:00 Walk around the block.
  • 09:00 Put a fan on the thermostat, it’s not tracking the temp.
  • 10:00 Morning worship meeting.

Trane XL1050 Thermostat: We purchased a new air conditioner several days ago and it came with this “Smart” thermostat. The short version of these paragraphs is that the XL1050 is a very poor thermostat. (Which is its primary purpose by the way.) There is NO excuse for the temperature on the display to be six degrees off!

I spent days trying to figure out why the temperature on the thermostat always reads setpoint and it’s obviously WRONG.

The thermostat draws so much power that Trane had to program in a “Correction Factor” to compensate for the increased temperature of the thermostat. The problem with that method (Versus a tiny cooling fan) is that air movement severely affects the “Apparent” temperature that is being used to control the air conditioner. In my case I have a small home where the return is within 6 feet of thermostat and ceiling fans are often used. I ended up putting a small fan under the thermostat to pull the heat from the unit.

The thermostat is now much more responsive and predictable. The only trouble with this solution is the thermostat only has 5 degrees of correction and I needed six. I had to lower my setpoints one degree to account for not being able to enter a large enough correction factor.

Summitted, we’ve signed up for updates.

  • 06:00 Coffee and getting organized.
  • 07:00 Assessing the new A/C.
  • 11:00 Nap Time!
  • 12:00 Check bank accounts for payments due.
  • 13:00 Stressing my thermostat.
  • 15:00 Writing up a document on the thermostat.
  • 16:00 Had a bit of salad.
  • 17:00 Dinner
  • 18:00 Program thermostat
  • 19:00 Childfund survey.
  • 20:00 Scrabble
  • 21:00 Bed

Training the Trane Thermostat: Our new Trane variable speed has an XL1050 thermostat, it is not as cool as I was told. The largest inconvenience is that the thermostat generates so much heat that it has to compensate for the actual room temperature. (Like 4 degrees) If you put a fan on it it will show four whole degrees lower than the room temp!

It is also very slow to respond to changing conditions. We were cooking and the room got 4 degrees warmer (Using a second thermometer) and the Trane thermostat showed set point temperature and didn’t change. I even tried a hair dryer and could not get it to change! If they are putting a computer into these thermostats then they aught to have a remote sensor that can be placed below so that the temp is not affected by the unit’s temp.

Finally Got them!

Plans: Let the NodeMCU’s and the dehumidifier run until 13 October.

The Homestead Flood. We had a tornado warning at 9PM yesterday so I had prepared by moving the car up the driveway and checking all the automated systems in the house. Once that had passed we turned in for the evening. I woke up and it was POURING outside, by the time i changed clothes the ran let up but the front lawn was now a pond.

The garage in the back usually floods when it rains this hard so I left the front yard to check the back side of the garage. The water was slowly running underneath the door onto the floor where I had tubs and tubs of stuff. It took me the next half hour to clear out where the water was. I also had to lift live power strips out of the water, that was just a little scary. Headed back out to the front yard and wanted some pictures of the flood so I had to wade out to the street though the flowing water.

I jumped when a stick hit my foot, i only had Flip-Flops on.

An hour after this picture was taken the water was gone! I moved the dehumidifier into the garage to dry it out this evening.
