25 august 2020, a day in progress

Status: Sheltering in place, we have plenty of food and supplies..

Plans: Let the NodeMCU’s and the dehumidifier run until September.

NodeMCU ESP8266 Wi-Fi SoC

NodeMCU Status: Our air conditioner is limping with a oil logged evaporator until we replace the unit in October. The thermostat is also limping along because of leaking batteries. I’m using these NodeMCU’s to measure the temperature and humidity throughout the house and turn on / off the power to the thermostat.

I need to make a box that can turn on/off the dehumidifier. First the dehumidifier is horrible at reading the humidity when it is not running. (The water in the unit floods the sensor and cycles the unit unnecessarily.) Second is that the unit is too large for our home. (Draws 8 Amps and pulls 7-9 gallons per day, I suspect it is over drying the air.) The idea is to control the dehumidifier according to the six sensors across my home.

The simplest idea is to control the unit from an existing NodeMCU, the most complicated would be to build a relay box from scratch. What I cannot predict is the affect of the arcing when the contacts open. (Will it affect the NodeMCU?) I have a current sensor on the wires, hopefully we can open the relays only when the compressor is not running. I’ll have to dedicate a NodeMCU to this task to accomplish the switching when the compressor is off.

Still making improvements, the humidity sensor at the Air Handler “Feels” the humidity from the evaporator. The two sensors in the bedrooms are beyond the blower. (Meaning they don’t change unless the blower is running, Maybe a shower) I moved the sensor from the sewing room into the Dining Room. It was dryer and warmer than most of the house.

About our current racial climate

Narrative: I’ve spent hundreds of hours reading the news about the protesting encouraged by the BLM Corporation International. They are very skilled at mixing “Peaceful Protests” and violence into “Mostly Peaceful Protests”. They are also very good at squashing the media into publishing just their narrative by having people on the ground telling the journalists what they can video and publish under the threat of violence. No one is talking about people are innocent until they are proven guilty by their peers in a court of law, rather they may have judged and promoted immediate convictions based on video they’ve edited/published. They are remarkable in their taunting, then they file complaints against the police and government about 1st Amendment rights being quelled by police brutality, which is the whole reason they are protesting. (Maybe, they still could want a Marxist government that redistributes the money to bring the poor out of poverty and give control of the country to the working class. (DPRUSA?) They have to get the police out of the way before pushing the laws of this country aside with these protests.) The-revolutionary-philosophy-of-marxism No one is talking seriously about the 25 Trillion dollars of Debt we’ve (Politicians) run up as we keep finding ways to give away money. We also seem to be forgetting that a couple of these people (at the root of all this protesting) are convicted felons who’s aggression contributed to the painful loss of their lives in front of a video camera. I did read an article that links a pandemic to protests, apparently the oppressed are motivated during a pandemic to strike out at their government’s misgivings.

Cancelling subscriptions to Newspapers.

I have also abandoned Facebook, Twitter too.

Feelings: As Christians we are compelled to look after the Widows and the poor. Just how we do that in this climate when there is so much energy fighting the democracy I don’t know. We’ve resorted to giving money to the Atlanta Community Food Bank https://acfb.org/ until I can come up with something better.

24 August 2020, a day in progress

Status: Sheltering in place, we have plenty of food and supplies..

Plans: Let the NodeMCU’s and the dehumidifier run until September.

  • 04:00 More riots across the country, Portland is still the example to follow.
  • 07:00 Up Sipp’n Coffee
  • 08:00 Shower and making plans
  • 09:00 measuring the AC current on the data wires with the power off.
  • 10:00 Dressed ready to go to the Doctor
  • 12:00 Back from the Doc, Lunch and a Nap.
  • 14:00 Grounding the 48V POE Switch
  • 16:00 Data line to driveway is working, mounting camera.
  • 17:00 Din Din
  • 18:00 Blogging and reading about Wisconsin riots.
  • 19:00 Wiring up a relay to control the dehumidifier.

Security Cameras: I’ve spent the last couple of days trying to figure out why the cable to the gable over the garage would not connect to an Ethernet device. I used and O Scope and saw about a 4v AC signal on the wires. When I shut down the house electricity the noise was still there. (Meaning it was coming from my emergency wiring.) Later I found out that the POE switch was the culprit and needed to be grounded. I finally mounted a working camera over the garage after about three days of trying.

Homestead DC Power: The bottom section of the above picture is two 15A 24V power supplies that work alongside the solar panels and provide power for the 300W inverters on the right side. The idea is that during the day a relay connects my computers to the 300W inverter and run them on the solar power. The system doesn’t make as much power on a partly cloudy day, much less in fact. Most days I make about 13 cents worth of electricity.

23 August 2020, a day in progress

Status: Sheltering in place, we have plenty of food and supplies..

Plans: Let the NodeMCU’s and the dehumidifier run until September.

  • 08:00 Sunday
  • 08:00 Up, scrambled eggs for breakfast.
  • 09:00 getting ready for church.
  • 10:00 Church
  • 11:00 Lunch
  • 12:00 Nap
  • 14:00 bring coffee to a friend.
  • 16:00 Finally home, troubleshooting driveway camera.
  • 17:00 Driveway camera data cable is still not useable.
  • 19:00 Watching Contagion with the wife.
  • 21:00 Bedtime

Security Cameras: I bought a new security camera system more than a year ago but have not had the time to actually install them. The current cameras cost about $200 each and have a fourth of the resolution of the new ones. When I tried installing the camera over the driveway it didn’t like the data cable. After several attempts to check the wiring there was nothing wrong with the cable. I tried mounting the camera in the corner of the house replacing an existing camera there as well. That camera worked without any issues.

Original Camera (Grainy)

New Camera

I also added an IR illuminator from the eve of the house onto the driveway which can be seen illuminating the grass. When I first mounted it I had not aligned it with the driveway. Later, I figured out how to use the reflection on the glass to align the illuminator to the middle of the driveway. (I looked for my face in the glass, then I knew that I was directly in front of the illuminator.)

The idea is that during the day a relay connects my computers to the 300W inverter and run them on the solar power. The system doesn’t make as much power on a partly cloudy day, much less in fact. Most days I make about 13 cents worth of electricity.

Narrative: I’ve spent a great deal of time reading the news about the protesting encouraged by the BLM Corporation International. They are remarkable in the complaints that are filed against the police and government about 1st Amendment rights being quelled by police brutality, which is the whole reason they are protesting. (Maybe, they still could want a Marxist government that redistributes the money to bring the poor out of poverty. They have to get the police out of the way before pushing the laws of this country aside with these protests.) No one is talking seriously about the 25 Trillion dollars of Debt we’ve (Politicians) run up as we keep finding ways to give away money.

Louisville police arrested 76 at the demonstration (in NuLu), but in the hours and days after, protesters lambasted Revelry online, making allegations including that the owner had warned police about the occupation. The gallery has publicly denied this claim. The “Fire! Fire! Gentrifier!” sign outside of Revelry had been used at an earlier protest against the mayor. Some NuLu businesses fought back, asserting that the protesters had no right to issue demands. One called it “bullying,” and at least one other compared protesters’ tactics to the Mafia’s. But, their strategy seemed to work. Protesters have succeeded in securing changes that even some detractors agree were needed to diversify NuLu. https://www.leoweekly.com/2020/08/nulu-protest-demands-work-appropriate/

A medic, who gave the name Phoenix, confronted an officer she said had maced her and beaten her. She and a friend criticized the police for dispersing the entire crowd when only a few people had broken into PPA. “You are taking the actions of one person and you are punishing a movement,” Phoenix said. “One person did a fire and you think it’s OK to attack everybody here?”

“You’re all practicing group punishment,” the officer replied. “Because a few cops have done wrong things and you think we all need to suffer and be out here 69 days straight.” https://www.opb.org/article/2020/08/05/portland-oregon-protests-police/

Finally, let’s note that protests at private homes are strategically misguided. Such protests tend to turn off potential sympathizers. The goal of political protest should be to generate outrage and empathy among possible supporters. But a protest at a home or at a restaurant defeats that purpose by making the protestors appear to be vindictive bullies.  Public protests and civil disobedience are more effective at persuading others to see the justice of one’s cause.

Peeved protesters may get a thrill from demonstrating at a politician’ domicile. But their anger is misdirected. The official at home is not the problem. Rather the problem is what happens when the official is at work. These protesters would be more effective if they were informed by the history civil disobedience and by a more systematic conception of political power. The Problem of Protesting at People’s Homes

Feelings: As Christians we are compelled to look after the Widows and the poor. Just how we do that in this climate when there is so much energy fighting the democracy I don’t know. We’ve resorted to giving money to the Atlanta Community Food Bank https://acfb.org/ until I can come up with something better.

The dehumidifier will use a little more power…

I thought that my $180.00 electric bill was high until I talked to a friend who’s bill was over $350!

16 August 2020, a day in progress

Status: Sheltering in place, we have plenty of food and supplies.

Plans: Let the NodeMCU’s and the dehumidifier run until September.

  • 07:00 Up making plans for church today.
  • 09:00 Getting ready for service.
  • 10:00 Service
  • 11:00 Air conditioner tried to run without the fan, oops!
    • I got lucky that the temperature sensor in the air return cut off the compressor.
  • 12:00 Lunch and a nap
  • 14:00 Reading the news.
  • 15:00 Adjusting the software on the Home Assistant.
  • 16:00 Eating dinner.
  • 17:00 Reading the news.
  • 18:00 Washing our hoses and tanks.
  • 19:00 Watching a movie.

Upgraded to a four relay module so that I can actually control the temp.

I am still having issues with the evaporator freezing today. Even after running the heat pump without the fan didn’t clean out the oil in the evaporator. (Boo!)

Home Assistant data view

I found an error in the programming that turned on the compressor without the blower running. Luckily the temperature sensor at the air return manifold was satisfied and cut off the compressor before it was damaged. I added a separate check to make sure the fan was running when the compressor is on. The programming failed to catch another process turning off the air handler at the same time.

I also added a temperature check after the temp is satisfied. I run the fan while measuring the temperature at the evaporator coils, when that temp gets over 70 degrees it is safe to restart the compressor. Since I have temperature sensors in the bedroom I can accurately set the bedroom temp regardless of the house temp. (Within one tenth of a degree)

Muffin fan wind speed check

I took an old fan from the garage and put it in the duct to my “Man Cave”. The O Scope measured slightly higher than 80Hz pulses from the fan. That will give me a relative speed to check for ice in the evaporator slowing down the air flow.
