27 Dec 2020, A day in progress

Status: Sheltering in place, we have plenty of food and supplies.

This is about all I have left of my parents.

We’ve installed a new Air Conditioner and there is a terrible amount of work to be accomplished. The highest priority is insulate the ducts against moisture and clean up the living room. I have to run a new duct to the dining room and do a bit of insulating on the ductwork over the living room.

Project Engineering: Layout new ductwork. With a variable speed compressor the temperature drop in the ducts has a much greater affect on the performance. The reason is that the forced air temp can be just a few degrees above the room temperatures. (Meaning that a few degree change becomes a large percentage of the heat/cool capacity into the room.) I’ve doubled the insulation on the 6″ ducts since they had the greatest surface area per volume of air. I’ve also doubled the long trunk line to the Master Bedroom since it’s length and the two 6″ ducts were affecting the air significantly. I don’t currently have a plan for the 8″ duct into the kitchen since I need a 12″ duct to encase the 8″ duct.

My EcoFlow R600 Pro won’t be shipped until 15 January 2021, I should get it in February 2021. Boo!

The COVID numbers have gotten really high from Thanksgiving, in fact they are the highest I’ve ever seen them.

Narrative: I’m skipping the time bullets today. The heater is working pretty well with the majority of the ducts connected back. I used the NodeMCU network to record some data on the performance of the ducts I’ve already installed. (Not Many)

Feelings: As Christians we are compelled to look after the Widows and the poor. Just how we do that in this climate when there is so much energy fighting the democracy I don’t know.

Researched Philippines Typhoons last month, they took a huge toll on the island. I watched several videos, 3-5 feet of water leaving 3-5″ of mud on everything inside their homes and on the streets. This will take a long time to clean up, I checked the Internet and they were pretty bad off. Homes and crops were destroyed and thousands are displaced without enough food or water. According to CNNCF they anticipate being back to normal by Jan 2021, WOW!

I sent a message to CF asking about our letters we’re missing, they’ve not responded.

It’s been very cold the last couple days and that has given me an opportunity to see how well our new heat pump works. (Along with the new ductwork I’ve spent months installing.) I also found out that our dryer vent needs to be replaced, very cold air is entering the house through the dryer at night.

At 3AM in the morning I enabled fossil fuel

I worked on cleaning up the messes all through the house since the flood and moving the church out of the school. I also tested the water pump that I got for Christmas and promptly destroyed it with 24 volts. (Instead of 12V) I need some barbed fittings that I ordered today.

It was a VERY Cold morning but our new Air Conditioner / Heat Pump worked like a champ. (Did not need to use fossil fuel.)

The bedroom did get a little warm even with it being very cold outside. Apparently there is more insulation in that room as it gained heat until we opened the doors.

The current thought is to zone the bedroom with a separate thermostat and a 6″ duct valve, both of which I already have in hand. Time for breakfast then a nap.

Cleaned up the insulation from the driveway. I had removed the insulation from the old flexible ducts that connected my cave so that I could try and make a 8x6x6 Wye that had less mass. It didn’t turn out very good just using the flexible ducts, I’ll need some stiff material for the next generation.

Took another nap, we like our naps. There was a fairly large ant pile in the back yard that I sprinkled some bait onto.

Strange day today, we’re having groceries delivered later and I have to make a run to the liquor store for some drinkables. Made my usual 4 eggs for breakfast and then worked on a cable so that I could control the attic fans from the garage NodeMCU. The cable simply breaks one side of the pair of wires with a connector that connects to the NodeMCU relay. I ran up all three fans and checked the airflow into the eve vents using a ladder and a sliver of tissue paper. The result was that the wind had more to do with the airflow than the three fans did.

The wife went to the eye doctor and I went to the liquor store with the blue Ford Focus that hadn’t been driven in a while. No issue with getting the suds and I returned home since it’s just plain dangerous to be out in this raised risk of COVID. Family wants me to visit the Doc about my foot and I totally blew my opportunity to put off the appointment with the intestines’ doctor. I need to call them on Christmas Eve and cancel the appointment for Monday.

Busy day planned today. Checked Childfund and no letters, I am so bummed. I spent the morning cutting out the crossbars from a radiator fan to reduce the drag on the air flowing through the fan. There were numerous complaints about this fan being used to “PUSH” air into a radiator.

They claim poor performance even when the blades are reversed. I didn’t know how many I could remove without affecting the strength of the motor support in the center. I’ll start with three rows, I can take more of them out, but it’s messy with all the pieces flying around.

We drove to the kids house and delivered some presents before eating Chick Fillet outside with them. After getting back to the house I pulled the motor out of the powered vent in the roof so that I could use a DC radiator fan instead. I climbed back into the attic and mounted the 14″ radiator fan underneath the vent. (You can see the screen to the outside through the running fan blades.)

I don’t know if there is more air with this single 14″ or with the two 12″ fans, it’s awfully close when you run the numbers. I might get up into an Eve vent and measure the amount of air entering the attic…

Eggs and corned beef hash for breakfast. Had to repair a temporary duct that fallen off the plenum first thing this morning. Vacuumed the floor after traversing the attic, i always end up with pink insulation on my clothes.

Took a long nap, woke up with foreign matter in my mouth though… I need to be more diligent with my eyes, tongue and not eating before sleeping.

Watched the movie “The Last Blockbuster Video” (store) tonight, it was better than I had expected. Lots of good memories and facts to go with them.

Made four eggs and a slab of sausage for breakfast. Church services on Zoom was the next thing we accomplished.

I got up into the attic and installed the second attic fan under my wind turbine roof vent and connected them to a power supply in the garage. The fan is actually a cheap 12″ automobile radiator fan. I looked at several solar attic fans and they were over a hundred bucks. I may look for a higher quality motor, but I wanted to prove the concept first. Wind turbines are not designed to be force air fed, they normally take the air movement across them and pull the air out of the attic. There are two turbines on our roof and one powered vent that the motor bearings are shot. I wanted to improve the airflow and reduce the 130Watts that the powered vent consumes. I also have 600W of solar panels that could easily power a few DC fans to cool the attic.

I can run them on as little as three volts, but they have a good speed at 6V and consume about 2 amps each. (12W) I think the wind turbine vent would spin off the roof with 12V @ 80W of air pushing it! LOL

The heat pump kept up with the demand all evening, I am certain there is a crossover point where we are providing most of the heat by running the compressor. That point appears to be below 30 degrees, our previous unit would go to Emerg Heat at 35 because it was hard coded in the thermostat. I could not find that setting in our current unit so i don’t know how it knows to switch over to gas. (Or if it will.)

I sent a message to CF asking about our letters we’re missing, they’ve not responded.
